GMC Repair: Vehicle Speed Sensor, vehicle speed sensor, numerical displays

Question
My digital display is fine. My speedometer started flashing all kinds of different numbers and then after awhile it just stays on zero except once in awhile it will flash and odd number now and then. I was told it was more than likely the VSS. I looked all over my transmission and could not find it. Could it be on top of the back of the transmission or maybe have a cover?

Question -
Where is the VSS located on a 1992 GMC Jimmy S-15?
Answer -
If you have a MECHANICAL type speedometer ( a pointer) as you would see on many older vehicles OR your have DIGITAL DISPLY TYPE which you only see numerical displays of the speeds, Most likely you have a MECHANICAL TYPE. The vss is usually located attached to the backside of the instrument cluster or could also be mounted anywhere above, under or near the instrument cluster.

WHY do you need to find it ?.

OK, My ERROR, It is on the transmission. It is located at the back of the transmission where the transfer case is attached to the back of the transmission.

It will have a single 2 wire plastic connector plug on it and it is round and is usually black in color. Once you unplug the 2 wire electrical connector from the VSS you will see a small bolt on a metal bracket that holds the VSS in place. Once you remove this small bolt and pull out the VSS you will lose a small amount of transmission fluid when you remove it.

If you are replacing it because your complete digital display is not working, This will NOT solve the problem.

I need to know EXACTLY WHY you NEED to replace it.

Answer
Then look on the transfer case. I do not have a manual available or I would scan and e-mail you a picture of it's location.

This VSS usually has only 2 wires attached to the electrical connector that plugs into the VSS.

If your POSITIVE that it is the VSS go buy a new one and then seeing the new one will show you what you are looking for under the vehicle.
