GMC Repair: 1981gmc 1/2 ton won)t start, neutral safety switch, aluminum wire

Question
before I changed the starter in my truck, I would turn the key and it would click a few times then the starter would engage, and the truck would start. The day I changed the starter the same thing happened click, click, click, but then notning.  I got a little pissed and turned the key repeatedely, then I heard a sound like something kicking out at the fusebox under the dash anyway. I changed the starter and thought everything would be copasetic.  However, there was nothing. Not a click, nothiong. I checked for power at the starter with a test light, and there is powert.  I checked for power at the distributor with the key on, and there is power there.  Now the cigar lighter, horn do not work, but the fuses are not blown. Where should i look?  Neutral safety switch. ignition switch, or is it a fusible link at the solenoid, or a burnt wire or what?  I hope you can give me an idea of where to start tracking down the problem.  thaNKS, JIM

Answer
Most likely you fried one of the fusible links at the starter post. A fusible link is simply a rubber covered aluminum wire that melts internally. This link(s) can look perfectly normal looking at the outside but have melted internally.

Use your test light, I prefer using a volt meter as it is more reliable, and check for battery voltage up beyond the length of the fusible link area of which is usually about 3 or 4 inches in most cases.

Let me know what you find.

As to your starting problem with the click, click, click, Check both ends of the RED battery cable for signs of corrosion. I would also suggest that you remove the battery and the starter from the vehicle and hand carry both items into any major parts store such as autozone, checkers, napa or similar type place and they will be more than happy to test these items for you for free.

let me know.
