Alfa Romeo Repair: Alfa 156 2.0 tspark, air flow sensor, manual gearbox

Question
Hi,
I have an Alfa 156, 2.0 twin spark, 1998.
The original fault i had with the vehicle was that the engine would 'hunt' (the revs would go up and down at idle)
and would often cut out. i mananged to cure this fault by cleaning out the throttle body and what i thaught was the idle speed valve/motor. The car is much better after that and when fully warm will idle smoothly, during warm up however it still surges whilst warming up but without cutting out(although not when completely cold where it idles fine). Another fault i have is that when fully warm and trying to pull away from traffic lights there is no power until i reach 3ooo rpm and then it shoots away like a rocket! i have to rev the engine to nearly 3000 rpm before moving away. It has a manual gearbox.
I would apreciate any advice on these problems.

Thank you in advance

Dave.

Answer
Remove the maf sensor from the system. Find the channel that the air flow sensor is in--not the temp bulb in the main tube. Spray it with electrical contact cleaner to remove the airborne gunk and reinstall the unit. Also, clean the battery terminals to bright.

I am in the USA without access to newer data. If it has a map sensor (on the firewall with a vacuum tube and an electrical plug) make sure the vacuum tube is free of debris.

Next step would be to look for air leaks after the maf sensor.
