Alfa Romeo Repair: Upgrading the electrical ignition system, msd 6a ignition, electronic voltage regulator

Question
I have a '77 Alfa Spider.  The battery s new.

It has a dual point ignition system, old alternator and old regulator.  Is it better to upgrade this system to a new electronic system? If so what model and type of equipment do you recommend?

When the car is running and warmed up if I stop at a red light at night, the alternator light glows and the head lights go dim.  I'm assming that this is related to the voltage regulator and altenator.  Should they be replaced; if so, wht do you recommend.

Thanks

Answer
If you do not use it as a daily driver then just get an MSD
6A ignition control. This will increase the life of the contacts
(points) and boost available spark power at the plugs.  If you
do use it daily then get an early Bosch electronic distributor for this model and power it also with the MSD 6A.  In either case you will also need modern ignition wires (not solid core).

You need an electronic voltage regulator.  Also, test the alternator this way:  with a DMM (digital multi meter) set to
ac volts, low scale. Put the positive lead on the battery terminal at the alternator and the negative lead on negative battery post.  You must get a reading of less than 0.300 volts ac or the alternator should be replaced.  If you get a good reading then change the brushes and you are set.  The
brushes are easy to change on both the Bosch and Marelli
alternators.
