Alfa Romeo Repair: Alfa spider will not start, alfa spider, gauge wire

Question
I have a '77 Alfa Spider.  The battery is new.  The car would start and run fine until I fixed a wiring problem on the turn signal.  The previous owner reversed the two wires for the passenger side turn signal.  I fixed that and the car seemed to start Ok.  I left the key in the ignition over night in the off position.  When I tried to start the car the normal lights came on but the starter did not kick in and turn the flywheel.  I'm not sure if I should start troubleshooting with the ignition (could the ignition contacts have gone bad because the key was in overnight) or the starter (could there be a dead spot on the armatuer).  Should I be looking somewhere else?

Thanks.

Answer
Leaving the key in the ignition does not harm the contacts.
Run a 16 gauge wire from the battery positive terminal to the
small wire on the starter.  If the starter then works fine, the problem is probably the ignition switch start contacts.
If you get a repeated click, click then the problem is a weak
battery.  If you get one click or no clicks replace the starter.
