Alfa Romeo Repair: 1969 Fiat Spider 124 AS, fiat spider 124, cup seals

Question
My Fiat has not been started in about 15 years.  Besides buying a new battery, what steps should I take before starting it. It was running good prior to storage.  Can you give me some advice?

Answer
Joanne,

You are most probably in for some problems.  Cars do not like to sit.  If it's been inside in a low humidity environment, you might luck out.
The spark plugs should be pulled out and new ones installed.  Look at the plug wires for cracks or dry rot.  While the plugs are out, put about 10 drops of oil in each plug hole. (about a half cap full.  Not enough is better than too much.)
With the coil wire removed from the coil, try cranking it over.  If it cranks over, do it until you get some oil pressure or for about 20 seconds, whichever comes first.  Replace your coil wire and try to start it.  If it starts, run it until it gets warm without revving it too much and shut it off.  Drain the oil, replace oil and filter, and try driving it.
If the engine doesn't turn over on the starter motor, write me back and I'll talk you through some steps to free it up.

No matter what, you are going to have brake problems.  If not right away, then very soon after you start using the car.  Brake fluid attracts moisture from the air.  Since it contains Alcohol, it absorbs the water.  There is usually a ring of corrosion formed inside the brake master cylinder and wheel cylinders or calipers, where the seals contact the bores.  When you start using the car, this ring of corrosion can abrade the cup seals and create leaks.  Some you can't see.  They might work fine for awhile, but don't be surprised if they don't.

I don't know how the car was stored, but a thourough inspection of all rubber and plastic parts, is very important.  Also, have it lubed as the grease in all the suspension and drive train components, depends on usage to remain semi-liquid and able to supply good lubrication.  It gets hard and crusty and the new grease will blow all this out of there.

If the engine won't turn over at all and is frozen, find a shot glass (1 Ounce) and put one glass of diesel fuel in each spark plug hole and wait 48 hours.  YOu may luck out.  I've seen this trick revive cars sitting longer then yours.  While you are waiting that 48 hours, write me back and let me know.   If it turns over, but won't start, then also, right back and describe the sounds and feel that don't seem right.

Good luck and be careful with those brakes!!!!
