American Motors: hard starting, spark plug wire, accelerator pedal

Question
QUESTION: hi, i have a 1983 jeep CJ5, the engine is rebult with about 1000 miles on it. i put a new carb on it. I am now storing it for the winter, i want to start it every now and then but after sitting even a week it is hard to start, it turns over for around 15-20 seconds before it catches. Is it not holding gas, or what? any help would be appreciated. the motor is an inline 6 258. with weber 2 barrel.

ANSWER: Did you install the Weber carburetor?
It sounds like the engine is starving for fuel. Before starting it after it has sat for a while, look down the carburetor and operate the accelerator linkage. You should see a solid stream of gas shooting down into the venturi. If not, then the carburetor is lacking fuel; check your needle & seat or for leakage from the float bowl.
If you see a strong fuel stream, confirm that you have a strong spark at the spark plugs.

QUESTION: yes there was a solid stream, and yes i did install the carb myself, and how to i check if plugs have a strong spark?

Answer
Remove a spark plug wire from a spark plug and hold the end about 1/2" away from the engine block.
Have someone crank the engine. You should have a strong spark jumping from the wire to the engine.
If not, you have an ignition problem. Quite often with the Iginition Control Module or the ignition coil.
Also, make sure the choke valve is closing on the carburetor when you initially step on the accelerator pedal when the engine is cold.
