American Motors: 1969 power steering, steering boxes, pontiac gto

Question
Kevin. Me again. I bought this Rambler American. I want to put power steering in it. I bought a steering box for it and the boltholes are completerly different. This new box is identical to my Pontiac GTO box. Evidently, Saginaw made the steering boxes all the same and the manufacturers had to drill the frames to fit them accordingly. Is this correct? Did they use special plates on the frame to fit the boxes? Like they had to when they added sway bars? Or did they just drill the frames as each car was built. I opened up a can of worms here, I guess. The manual steering is horrible. What can I do to fix it?  Thanks, Jerry M.

Answer
There is a "sill adapter" which is a mounting plate between the steering gear and the frame.
You'll have to find one from another AMC with power steering. It is a saginaw gear box. Check with Collier AMC in Pikeville,NC. Their number is 919-242-4462. Ask for Mr. Collier. They are an old AMC dealer and they have hundreds of old AMC's on their lot good for parts.
