American Motors: 1982 CJ7 ignition. No spark, coil sensor, jeep vehicle

Question
I have a 1982 CJ7 with a stock 4.2L carbureted engine that won't start. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes it starts, but mostly not. If it does start, it runs great; never dies or cuts out. It gets fuel, and it cranks. I've replaced the coil, ignition control module, start switch; no help. I started checking wires. There is power to the coil, but I get no spark from the coil-to-distributor wire when cranking; and obviously no spark from the plug wires either. The wires are not very old, and appear to be in good condition. I ruled out the start solenoid since it cranks. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Lou.

Answer
I have to start off by telling you my experience with post 79 AMC/Jeep vehicle is VERY limited.
That being said, if you have replaced the ignition control module and coil and when you experience a no start condition you have power to the iginition coil, it seems you problem lies in your distributor. The ignition module receives a signal from the distributor. This allows the module to have the coil spark when it is suppose to. I would check your pick up coil/sensor/reluctor inside your distributor. In the old days, I would have said replace your ignition points.
