American Motors: 1984 AMerican Motors Eagle, spark plug wires, spark plug

I have a 1984 am motors eagle that will not start. WWhen you turn the key it fires but will not run.  DAughter was driving it when it happened.  Tryed a new coil but no luck. Seems to have gas in the carb. Could it be an ignition problem

Pull OFF one of the spark plug wires and hold it about an inch or closer to any metal object and see if you can see the spark jump from the wire to the metal object such as a bolt on the car or something else as someone tries to start the engine.
