Question -
I have a 1970 AMC Hornet SST that has been siitng out on a farm field for over 10 yers, I am trying to bring it to life. All I Know is the it has a transmission leak and a frozen carb. What else should I look at for problems?
Answer -
1) Look for critters that may have made the car their home. Field mice, rats, snakes, etc. They can chew wiring, hoses & upholstry.
2) Remove the spark plugs and shoot some WD-40 into the cylinders. This might help free up rusted rings.
3) Don't try cranking it using the fuel in the gas tank. Replace the fuel filter and run a tube from the fuel pump into a gas can with fresh gas. Drain the fuel tank when safe to do so. Replace the "frozen" carb.
4) Use a breaker bar and try turning the large bolt on the crankshaft. Hopefully, the engine will turn by hand.If not, your engine might be seized.
5) If you are able to turn it over by hand, hook up a fresh battery, make sure the battery cables are clean, and turn the key. You don't want to start it, just crank it over with the plugs out. You might want to put a few tablespoons of light oil down the cylinders.
6) If it cranks, check the compression
7) Check for spark at the coil
8) Install new plugs
9) Change the oil & filter
10) Fresh gas
11) Should be good to go.

Answer
The extermination of rodents is out of my area of expertise. Maybe try and prevent the mice from getting into the car by sealing the access holes. Move the car to a more populated area like a driveway or front yard. Remove the seats and inspect for nests, as well as under the dash, trunk and engine compartment. Remove the carpet and padding. Get the car off the ground, Place mouse traps around the tires. See if there is a pest expert on All Experts. Good luck.
