Audio Systems: JVC KD-AR5000 Touchscreen Blank, nissan xterra, ribbon cable

Question
I have a JVC KD-AR5000 cd receiver whose touchscreen shows only the radio station I'm listening to.  The remainder of the screen simply has a mass of vertical bars.  If I push the menu button, same vertical bars appear.  Radio works fine.  Pushing the reset button does not remedy the problem.  In reading a previous post the expert mentioned possible ribbon cable breakage between the flip screen and the main unit.  Would this be the first thing to check out?  Do I have to completely uninstall the unit to access this ribbon cable or other suspect parts?  If I do need to uninstall, any general directions for removing from a 2001 Nissan Xterra?  Thanks so much for your interest and time.

Answer
Yes, it could be the ribbon cable connecting to the display or it is more likely a defective display panel itself. Try wiggling or jiggling the panel or seeing if something you can do externally will cause the panel visuals to return.  That would indicate an intermittent connection somewhere in the works; cable or connector most likely.

Access to the display would require complete disassembly so you can get into it.  JVC may sell the flip down assembly for replacement but the cost is likely about the same price as a new unit - my guess.

Hope this helps.
