Audio Systems: BMW MID E53 Radio, car stereo wiring, amp fuse

Question
Have a 2002 BMW X5 (3.0). For the last few months I have noticed slight static on radio stations that are usually very strong. Recently the radio worked fine and the next day it will not power on. I checked the 10 amp fuse on the back of the CD player and it was good. The display will show the time and other stuff like mileage etc but the radio will not power up. The CD will not eject the disk that is in the unit.

What should I do to fix this problem? It took me a while to pull all this stuff from the dash; it is not my forte.

Please help!

Thank you

Answer
My guess is the external amplifier has gone out.  Did you check the fuse on that (it may be mounted back in the trunk area).

Also, if the remote wire has been broken or pulled loose somehow that would do it.

Here is a wiring guide that may be helpful in checking out the wiring configuration.

If you need another opinion please try Ernesto also on allexperts.com who has more hands-on experience with this kind of problem.

PS: Some radios that year did not have an external amp and if this is so in your model then it seems the internal amplifier has gone bad.  There may be separate wires to the head unit; one for powering the illumination and dash stuff and one for the internal electronics stuff; probably has its own fuse as well.  Especially, check the two wires:

Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Red/Green
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Violet/White

and look for another fuse as there are likely two fuses for the radio system.

Best wishes.
