Audio Systems: Stereo System Problem, fisher studio, dual tape

Question
Hi there, thanks for reading my question, I hope I am not asking the wrong thing here.

I have a Fisher Studio Standard stereo system complete with Turntable (model MT855) Amplifier (model CA857) AM/FM (model FM855) dual tape deck (model CRW855) and a broken CD player (model AD 923)

This was bought around 1988 1989 and was working fine, the CD player quit reading discs but that is not my concern as of yet.

My problem is when I'm playing a record whether it be a 45 or 33 the music seems to fade from one speaker to the other speaker, when i play a tape or the radio, it works fine.

Could the problem be the needle? or the speakers? or the speaker wire?

Any information would be exceptional!

Thanks, and if you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask.

Answer
Since the amplifier/speakers are working fine with other inputs we can rule them out as part of the problem.

And the fading problem seems to be related only when you are playing recordings on the TT then we must assume it is the "troublemaker".

ONE:  Check the cables going from the TT to the amp inputs.  Pull the plugs out and  reinsert to make sure those connections have not become corroded.  Wiggle and twist the connectors in the socket so there is good ohmic connection.

TWO: Check the stylus for build up of dust or dirt around the stylus and stylus assembly as this often happens and can cause the very thing you are having trouble with.

THREE: If all these checks do not bring it back  to life then you may need to replace the style and/or the entire cartridge for the tonearm.  You can find replacements by googling the model number of the turntable.  I found it easily with one google.

best wishes.
