Audio Systems: Panasonic Plasma Audio vs. Apple TV, tv cable connection, panasonic plasma tv

Question
I own a Panasonic Plasma TV TH42PWD7.  For cable, I have Cox Communications and they issue a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8240HDC.  My receiver is a Onkyo TX-SR 502.
Presently, I use the RBG cables from my TV to my receiver video out. The receiver RBG video in goes to video out on the cable box. All 5 of my Bose speakers are run from my receiver to the speakers vis wires.  Despite a little dated, everything works great! Crystal clear. Love it.

The problem:
I purchased Apple TV. I set it up so the TV cable connection is thru the RBG (digital) to an HDMI adaptor then to the Apple TV. After a lot of trial and error, I finally got the video to work by setting the TV to Input 3 and the receiver to DVD. For the life of me, however, I can't get the audio to work. I've tried to wire the speakers directly to the TV, tried a toslink from Apple to the TV slots, and tried to wire the speakers directly to the receiver. All to no avail Frankly, I am at my wits end and need some help. Any advise would be most appreciated! Traci

Answer
Not being 100% familiar with AppleTV, is there some sort of setup menu in the device? Since there are additional optical outputs from the unit, it should be transmitting audio along with the video output from the HDMI port.

On the receiver, try plugging the Apple into one of the available RGB ports, and a digital audio into the corresponding port on the receiver. Check the settings menu for audio outputs and see if there's any selection for the toslink outputs.

Now, you shouldn't have to change anything on your TV from it's original setup. You're only adding the AppleTV as a source to the receiver (just like any other dource device - CD, DVD, BluRay, etc...) You should only have to change the input settings on your receiver to select between the cable box & the Apple TV.

Let me know if this helps, or if we need to delve in a bit farther...
