Question
Audio Systems: speaker, horn speaker, speaker unit
speaker
QUESTION: i was given what i thought was a speaker but i was told it was a pa speaker.so i was wondering if you cn look at the picture i am attaching and maybe give me an ballpark figure on what i might be able to sell it for since i have no need for it. if not any information would be appreciated. thanks diane

ANSWER: Yes, this is a horn speaker system of high performance.  I have some questions. If you can answer them, it will help me get closer to the real nature of this unit, its age and probable worth.

ONE:  The picture is not clear enough for me to see the slots on the side of the upper horn and the markings across the top of the bottom horn.  Can you supply me with a more clear or higher resolution photo?

TWO:  It appears the bottom horn may not have a speaker unit connected!  Is there a speaker or not?  A photo of the back side would help.

THREE:  Is there a driver unit on the upper horn (back side)?

FOUR:  Are there any markings that indicate manufacturer's name, model number, terminal connections, etc?  (It appears from this photo to be either very old  Altec or JBL).

FIVE:  Also, I need to know its size.  Please take a tape measure and jut measure the height, width and depth in inches.

You can email me directly for sending this information since you can send only one low resolution photo at a time on allexperts.  So, send to me at:  cleggsan at ieee dot org   (of course put it in regular email format; this expression is to keep spammers from picking up on it).

PS: By the way, do you have just the one unit or do you have a pair?

QUESTION: hi there i took the pictures u asked for , but unfortunatly all i could use was my phone. so i set the resolution higher and there much better , but now i'm having a problem attaching the since they are downloading as a  axps file and i dont know why or what to do, maybe i'l need to go to that department of experts for help in that area. however i do have some of the information u requested off the back of the speaker.it is a peavy sp-3 precision transducer, a product of peavy electronics corp, meridim  mississippi. max power 100 watts (28 V RMSI  continuous ) , impedence 8ohm, crossover 800hz,full range inputs. caution can cause ear damage.  the size is 33 1/2" tall,26 1/2" wide and 16" depth. i hope this info will help since i dont have the pictures at this point to attach. thanku for your help and taking the time to help me find out this information.   diane

Answer
Yes, I confirmed it to be  a  Peavey model after I had sent the first reply.

It is a horn loaded system which is wired for bi-amping (no crossover network included) and is for theatre, public address and outdoor system use.  It is a fine product but no longer supported or sold by Peavey.

Peavey is primarily a musical products company now days:  Guitar amplifiers, bass speakers for guitars and other musical reproductions.  They are a middle class maker and have long years of experience in their field.

I think the speaker box you have, the Peavey SP-3, value depends on a few factors:

ONE:  Overall completeness; that is, are the transducers still in the cabinet and are each of the drivers working as they should.

TWO:  Have crossover networks been added or does it require external electronic crossover and two amps to power the speaker.

THREE: OVerall condition of the box - scratches, marks, damage, etc.

FOUR:  Sound quality; that is are there air leaks, rattles, voice coil scrapes, etc.

Then, based on the condition its value can be set.  There are many fans of old Peavey equipment and it can be sold through forum boards, craigslist and eBay type of venues. Since it is big and heavy it is not easy to ship so it is best to find someone who is nearby or doesn't mind picking it up from your location.

If it is in good working condition and does not need any repairs it may be worth a few hundred dollars.  Less if there is damage that needs repaired or other disqualifying matters outlined above.

Let me know if you have further thoughts.
