Audio Systems: Ford Excursion factory dvd system, 2006 ford expeditions, ford excursion

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I have a 2004 Ford Excursion with the factory overhead rear dvd entertainment system. The stereo in the dash is the factory Ford CD-6 unit ( # 4C7T-18C815-AA).I purchased the vehicle used, and have never had the dvd system working. To clarify, the dvd player itself was missing when I bought the car. I have learned that this player was originally made by Delphi for this application. After looking at a friends Excursion with the factory setup, I can see that the dvd system is designed to play through the factory speakers controlled by the stereo.
I would like to bring my system back up to original working condition. This is where I could use some help. The original dvd player for the Excursion is kind of difficult and expensive to locate. I had a local car audio guy tell me that the dvd player and the dvd monitor screen separately out of 2003 to 2006 Ford Expeditions and or Ford Freestars are the same as the 2003 to 2005 Excursion. Although he did say that he was not 100% sure that it was a direct "plug and play" situation without some modifications. I am not opposed to some retro fitting and modification if it will work. I have done some checking, and I see that the Expedition and Freestar units are also made by Delphi, and look similar. They are packaged differently than the Excursion, but perhaps the dvd player itself can be interchanged between the respective cars? The main reason that I ask this is, that the Expedition and Freestar units are a lot easier to come by than the Excursion. If this will not work, perhaps you know of a source for replacement Excursion dvd components. Or, are there any aftermarket dvd players that will work like the factory unit did with the factory stereo, and original dvd screen? I would really like to keep all of the factory functions intact.
If you are unable to come up with this information, would you know of someone who may be able to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you sometime soon.
         Thank You,   -Matt

2The Job 1 and Job 2 radio incompatibility issue is due to a change in the manufacturing source and the software for the 2005 radios. Both changes were late
for the initial 2005 build. This resulted in a fall back to a Job 1 and Job 2 split in compatibility. The chart above identifies the correct combination of radios and
DVD players. There is no work around for this matrix - i.e. there is no way to make a Job 1 radio compatible with a Job 2 DVD

3Radio Software Level. The Radio Software Level may be determined by using the following method. This is the best way to assure compatibility between the
radio and DVD player. A full explanation may be found in the 2004 and 2005 F150 Workshop Manual, Section 415-00 Entertainment System.

Quick Steps:
1. Turn ignition key "ON".
2. Press the AM/FM button on the radio.
3. Simultaneously press and hold the 3 and 6 preset buttons 1-2 seconds (Speaker Test).
4. Press preset 4 within 5 seconds (Soft Levels)
5. Press the tune up button (^).
6. Record the MAIN software level. Compare with chart above.
7. Turn the radio "OFF" and then "ON" again by pushing the volume knob twice. Ignition "OFF" is NOT the same.
To make sure the radio and DVD unit are compatible, you need to ck the FES software level through the radio also. You can access this information the same
way as the radio software level with above Quick steps and select FES SOFTWARE.
1. For 2004 radio MAIN software 01.09.0 or higher with FES software 04.09.0
2. For 2005 radio MAIN software 00.08.0 or higher with FES software 01.04.0
3. For either radio if FES is not connected software level will be 00.00.0

QUESTION: Hello Ernesto,
As I mentioned in my initial request, the dvd player itself was not present when I purchased the Excursion. So, as you suggested, I did contact a local Ford parts person to see what I could find out. He was as helpful as he could be, given what he had to work with.
Here is what he was able to find out:

The Excursion should have come with dvd player # 4C7T-19G375-CA, which is actually Ford part # 4C7Z-18C907-CA. He explained that the 1st number (4C7T-19G375-CA), is what they call the engineering number. The 2nd number (4C7Z-18C907-CA), would be the actual part number. I say would be, because he was not able to find the part number in the Ford system. Another words, he told me that the number was not recognized as being a valid number for ordering purposes. Furthermore, as far as he could tell, it may have never been available. What he did find was, that the complete dvd entertainment assembly is the only way that he could get me the dvd player. And, that probably has always been that way since the vehicle was new. The engineering number for that complete assembly is : 4C7T-10E970-AC3BJC. The actual part number is : 4C7Z-78519A70-AAC. This part number appears to be still available, but at an unbelievable high price of over $4,700.00! Needless to say, That is just not an option that I can do. And after all, as I mentioned previously, all that I really need is the dvd player. He said, that possibly someone with access to Delphi numbers or catalogs might be able to verify what may or may not interchange by crossing the Ford part numbers that he provided above . He simply did not have the information himself.
I hope this sheds a little more light on all of this. I look forward to hearing back on what you find out.

         Thank You again,   -Matt
