Audio Systems: Possible TV Repair, vertical deflection, deflection amplifier

Question
We have a sanyo 32" television that is about 4 to 5 years old.  The picture will be just fine and then all of a sudden the screen will turn bright red and eventually go to a very thin white line across the screen.  Sometimes it will return eventually to the picture and sometimes it won't.  What we are wondering is if this is repairable or should we just junk it and buy a new tv.  I remind you that it is only 4 to 5 years old.

Answer
The tv is not worthy of an expensive repair.

The problem is related to a failure of the vertical deflection amplifier most likely.

It could be an intermittent condition.  Try jiggling the set or mildly smacking the cabinet in a few places.  This may dislodge the bad connection internal to the set and get it working more reliably.

However, if the vertical deflection amplifier section needs repair ti will cost $$; maybe over $100.  You will have to decide about that one.
