Audio Systems: Blueray subwoofer output, internal amplifier, astronomical odds

Question
I've encountered 2 Denon Blu Ray players that I can't figure out how to get any audio out of the subwoofer line out jack. One was the DVD-3800BDCI and the other is the DBP-4010UDCI. I've been looking for specs on these thinking maybe the level is lower %26 requiring much more amplification or something. Couldn't find any specs on the level.  Do you know anything about this?

Answer
Hi,

It would be astronomical odds for two different devices to be exhibiting the same "malfunction" so I'm leaning towards a set-up issue.
I have some suggestions to look at for troubleshooting purposes. Some of these may sound very basic, but I don't want to take anything for granted...

I'm going to assume you're using the analog audio outputs and a powered subwoofer?

Are the BR players set up for analog audio output? (some players offer this option in the set up menu)

Are you going straight to the subwoofer from the player, or into a receiver and THEN to the sub?

Due to the way some surround mixes are produced, sometimes the sub channel is used very sparingly. For testing purposes, make sure you're using a movie that is sure to have plenty of subs involved (big action sequences are perfect).

If you have a receiver that has a digital input, try running a digital out from the player to the receiver (either toslink or coaxial-  doesn't matter), and then the standard cable from the receiver to the subwoofer (making sure that the player is set up for digital surround output, of course).

Don't be afraid to crank up your powered subwoofer volume control... I've actually run into this with some customers of mine.
If you are using a passive subwoofer (no internal amplifier), you'll need to get that sub out (or as it's sometimes labeled LFE out) into an amplifier before hitting the speaker.

Let me know if any of these things help - or if you've already tried this, and need some new directions... Cheers!
