Audio Systems: Car Radio, power amplifier, rear speakers

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1993 Honda Accord the radio was not working and code was in display I entered the code and the radio worked but when turning volume up or down had a LOUD cracking from rear speakers but was working, the next day I turned radio on ( no sound) I tired a tape nothing I can change stations but no sound, is there a reset button on amplifier? can you help me. Don

ANSWER: The loud cracking sound can be from defective speakers.  If voice coil inside the speaker is loose or if the cone was damaged from rain water getting in it can cause this.

If the whole system went dead, including all speakers it could be the bad speakers have shorted to ground causing the amplifier to shut down by the internal protection system.

Therefore, check the speakers first and see if that is the cause of your problem.  If only the rear speakers were defective you could disconnect the rear wires and see if you can now get sound.  If so, you will need to replace them with good ones.

Does this help? Let me know if you have further questions.

Answer
Then chances are the power amplifier has failed.  It is probably an amp internal to the head unit.  If there is an external power amp it may be reset by just removing power from it for a few minutes.  You must remove all power to it.

But, if the power is internal to the head unit you will find it a more economical solution to just replace the entire head unit.  You can use the "outfit my car" work up at crutchfield.com to determine the radio that will fit your dash opening, etc.
