Audio Systems: Radio International Mode, monster fm, new beatle

Question
2004 New Beatle w/factory installed monsoon sound system
For several years now I have listened to my ipod via a monster/FM cable in my car.  Since the cable has died, i was investigating either putting an Ipod adapter kit in the car or looking at newer cables.  Seems like there's a question about whether or not their is an port on the back of my radio, i talked to the dealer ship yesterday, and they said they could install a kit for about $250.00 for parts and over 200.00 for labor.  That seemed like a lot to me, so I was looking at cables (like Monster or Griffen)  OK, here's my big question.  I read that if I could tune my radio to 'international' frequencies, I could get better reception from the FM cable, ie. using frequencies that are not allowed for use in the US.  I'm trying to see if there is some way I can set my monsoon radio, in my VW, to 'internatiol' mode or find some way to tune to these lower frequencies.  As it is, i cannot go below the standard 87.7

Thank you, Vickie

Answer
Do we understand correctly you just want good fidelity playback of your Ipod from the car audio system?

If yes to the above you are best off using an iPod adapter/input module that allows the iPod signal to go directly to the input of the amplifier in the radio rather than through the tuner.

Got to:

or:

The above suppliers should be able to give you the exact unit that will interface with your vehicle and sound system.  You will have to know the exact year/model of the bug you are driving and the radio that is installed in your car.

It should not cost so much.  (The car dealer is usually not a very good place to go because they very seldom have electronics specialists on staff).  A good custom car radio installer can do these very cheaply.

This model, for example, is $144.

Hope this helps.

PS: You might also try going through the "outfit my car" sequence at crutchfield.com which might lead to a different solution.  Any of the above staff specialists can help you with the exact unit best for your car when you call them.
