Audio Systems: loud speakers, Component versus modular audio systems

Question
Hi Paul,
I am in the market of purchasing a DJ System for back yard parties and possibly hall parties as well.  I am conflicted though regarding purchasing a set of powered speakers which I will not need to buy an amp for, or purchasing passive speakers which are cheaper in cost, but then I will have to buy an expensive amp.  Which sound set up would you recommend?  If I ask a salesman I am sure he will sell me the more expensive set up.
Thanks,
Gene

Answer
Dear Gene,  It is difficult to make value judgements for other people, especially when you do not know if they already own an equipment rack or not.  I have designed some powered systems, like the B52 matrix product line, which goes from the Matrix 200 which is very small and portable (good for Cafe's and Karaoke) to the Matrix 2000 which will easily fill a very large hall.  Powered systems have advantages and disadvantages.  Advantage - The designer can set the EQ and compressor and power available to work perfectly with his speakers.  But does he?  Disadvantage, the heat from the amp and speaker exacerbate one another, and the manufacturers NEVER make the speaker cabinets bigger, they just make the speakers effective cabinet volume smaller, causing less efficiency and greater distortion at the systems lowest frequencies.  In the Matrix 200 and 600, the amp is in its own enclosure, so that is a non issue.  Also a disadvantage is when the amp blows, you don't just replace it with another amp.  The WHOLE System has to be taken in.  If you are a novice, I would suggest an all in one system like the B52 Matrix systems.  If you are an advanced user, the separate amp, compressor and EQ give you the flexibility to upgrade your system one piece at a time.  Those are my thoughts on this.  Outside of B52, I am ill equipped to give brand and model advice.  I am happy to answer your questions further, except for this kind.  And as far as salespeople are concerned, they are just warm bodies to greet customers, and offer novice advice.  The blind leading the blind so to speak, so remember if their lips are moving they are lying to you.  Trust your ears and brain, NOT the salespeople.
