Audio Systems: Signal Clipping

Question
I had a question about signal clipping.  I just purchased a pair of used, Sony, 3-way, 140 watt max output speakers and a Yamaha, 2-channel, 80 watts per channel, stereo receiver off of Craigslist.  I only needed it to listen to an IPOD.  The speakers came with the manual and it mentioned that I should make sure my stereo receiver can produce a "high" (gave no specifics) wattage amount or the speakers could experience signal clipping and the tweeter could be damaged.  The manual gave no specifics on what wattage was high enough to avoid clipping.

So, the actual question, do you think 80 watts per speaker (channel) is enough to avoid clipping the 140 watt max speakers?  Will I immediately be able to tell if clipping is occurring?  Please advise.  Thank you.

Answer
You are well within the output range of the receiver. Clipping occurs when the receiver output exceeds the power rating of the speakers.

One thing about output wattage - these ratings are measured at full output volume. I doubt that you'll even be coming close to using the 80 watts per channel. Think of it this way - many tube amplifiers used by pro guitarists are, for example, 30 watts. At full volume, these are ridiculously loud. I couldn't imagine needing to crank your system hard enough to clip a pair of 140 watt handling speaker cabinets.

I say "Turn it up" and enjoy your purchase! Just be careful not to knock anything over while playing air guitar...
