Audio Systems: External Speakers, exact model number, rca plugs

Question
QUESTION: Hey Wayne,

I bought a small 17" inch tv, but am not satisfied with the sound. I have a couple of old speakers I want to hook up to it, but I have no idea how to do so. Please help

Thanks, Preston

ANSWER: I'll need to know the make / model of the TV and whether the speakers are powered or not. Also, do you have a stereo receiver of any sort?

QUESTION: Wayne,

The tv is a Magnavox, I don't have the exact model number. I also do not have a receiver but I can get one if it's needed.

Thanks, Preston

Answer
OK - what you want to look for on the TV is an "audio out". Depending on the TV, it may be a single or a dual set of RCA jacks. If your speakers are powered, you can plug them directly into these jacks (an adapter plug may be required if the speakers do not have RCA plugs).

If the speakers are not powered, you'll need a receiver. From the TV audio out, you'll connect to one of the receiver's audio inputs. It could be labeled as aux in or TV, etc... it doesn't matter too much as long as they are audio inputs. Then you'd use regular speaker cabling from the receiver to the speakers (any 14 gauge wire will do - don't spend big bucks on stuff like Monster Cable. Most hardware stores carry bulk cable that will do the job just fine).

Let me know if you need any more assistance! Cheers!
