Audio Systems: 8 ohm clip vs 4 on clip, audio power amplifier, impedance load

Question
Hi will a amplifier clip sooner with a 4 ohm speaker than a 8 ohm speaker for example lets said it clip at (-4db on it gain controls) with a 8 ohm. Will it clip there with a 4 ohm or not?

Answer
From a voltage gain point of view the clipping will occur at the same settings because an audio power amplifier is a voltage gain device.

From a power point of view the clipping will occur at a higher output on the 4 ohm speaker because the voltage, whilst remaining the same, gives much more power into the lower impedance load because more current can pass.  Power = I times V.

For the gain control setting point of view, then, it will clip at nearly the same point, depending on the stability of the internal power supply of the amplifier; if it is stiffly regulated the clip point will be at same setting in both cases.
