Audio Systems: Mixer problem, allen and heath, allen heath

Question
Hi, can you help us, we use an Allen & Heath mixer (WZ16:2DX)for live portable applications, mainly in small venues, we've had the mixer for about 6-7 years, and in that time had it repaired more that 3 or 4 times, which only helps to reduce the constant problems, never fix them, the main problem we have is either channel intermittent problems(volume up & down) or no volume control on the channel (same volume regardless of whether the faders up or down), we recently had all the ribbons replaced, which helped some channels perform better for a while, but not all of them.
The problems seem at their worst during sound check, afterwards things seem to get better!
So the question I wanted to ask you is, is this a common problem with most live mixers? does the mixer needs to warm up prior to sound check? (only used apx 2 times a month), or is this only a problem in faulty mixers, and we should just get rid and buy a new one?
Thanks in advance, Kind Regards, Rachael

Answer
No.... this is not a common problem. I will say however, that I am not surprised. Allen and Heath is like the British Jaguar before Ford bought it. It looks good but is typically problematic. I strongly recommend the Midas. If you find it to be too pricey then Mackie, Soundcraft, Yamaha are solid boards. Midas will outperform them all because it has very good mic preamps. If you ever record acoustic music you will appreciate the difference.
