Audio Systems: car cd player installed in boat, jvc cd player, volt ohm meter

Question
I want to put my JVC cd player from my car into my 89 celebrity boat.  I know
the identification of the wires from the cd player, but I don't know what the
wires are for the boat.  The boat wires are black, red, white, grey, green and
blue grouped together and then a separate purple one.  The cd player has a
lot more wires, but I know I won't be using all of them.  I got the face to light
up at one point, but no sound and then I think I blew a fuse.

Answer
You must find out what the wiring scheme is for the boat.  Colors are pretty much arbitrary; either you must trace them out with an ohmmeter or obtain the wiring diagram from the boat manufacturer. A quick google search did not show up anything useful.

You can trace the wires out easily with the aid of a small VOM (Volt Ohm Meter) and you can purchase one for under $10 at Home Depot or Walmart that will do the job just fine.   They are easy to use and can tell you where the start and end of each wire is on the boat.  You may need two people and long test leads to touch the two ends of the wire at the same time to get the continuity check.  But, should only take a few minutes to map out where all the wires are going. If speakers are still wired up in the boat, placing a battery across the wires that you think are for a speaker will produce a click in the speaker - but someone should be near the speaker with their ear up close because the click is not loud.

Hope this helps.
