Audio Systems: split track instructions, karaoke world, mackie mixer

Question
i was told that i needed to run two separate lines(right & left) stereo from our cd player into our mixer in order for our split track cd's to play without the vocals and the background. at first it didn't work. i lowered one of the channels totally and it worked. when i tried to play it again the vocals came back. is it the player, the cords, or is there a special way i need to place the settings on each channel. i am using a Maxie 16 channel board.

Answer
The vocals on 90% of recorded CD's are mixed to center which means that you will get them in both the left & right channels. In the Karaoke world an unorthodox trick is performed in order to make you think the vocals went away. If you do a search on line there should be both stand alone hardware devices and software applications that process the sound of a CD to do a phase trick and lower the vocal by about 15db. Rerecord the tracks if its software. If it's hardware, feed the output signal of the CD player into processor and processor into a channel of the Mackie mixer.
