Audio Systems: 1980s harmon kardon receiver, harmon kardon receiver, german companies

Question
Hello Robert,
I have a 80's era Harman Kardon 350i receiver that I have owned since new. I was considering purchasing a new surround sound unit but hate to part with this receiver because it is probably built much better than anything made today. It has issues with the knobs and switches. Sometimes static or left/right going off/on. I am assuming cleaning of the contacts would help. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Cliff

Answer
It certainly can't hurt for you to take a can of electronic contact spray and exercise the receiver controls since dirt could cause some of the static, but I wouldn'texpect too much.

In the world of consumer electronics a 25 plus year old receiver is considered a relic. Harmon Kardon in those years had their receivers made in Japan. Most of their products today are made in China. Believe it or not current technology is considerably better than the '80's providing of course that you buy wisely. Most of the major brands are having their wares made in China. Even the expensive auto manufacturers get most of their parts in China. The quality and workmanship have surpassed that of some of the top Scandinavian & German companies.
