Audio Systems: Line input for connecting USB turntable to receiver, line level inputs, external dac

Question
I have a ION TTUSB05 turntable to convert vinyl to digital.  I have a Technics receiver, model SA-AX540.  The turntable instructions has a warning:
"The RCA cables are LINE level.  Please only connect these cables to LINE level inputs.  You may damage your receiver if you plug in a LINE level into a PHONO input."
Prior to this warning, it says the cables should be plugged into a CD or Auxillary LINE input.  I don't think I have Auxillary input, but do have CD input.  Does it make sense that I should use the CD input rather than PHONO input?  Thank you.

Answer
Here's what you do. The ION has a switch on its underbelly that allows you to switch from Phono to Line level. Whichever you choose make sure that you plug the RCA's into an input on your receiver with the same nomenclature. CD and Auxiliary have the same sensitivity so it's either or.

FYI - I am somewhat of a purest. As such I treat vinyl reproduction very seriously. In order to convert any analog signal to digital at the very least you should not want to introduce unwanted noise and artifacts using a cheap A to D converter (known as a DAC). A DAC must be of sufficient quality to be able to handle both domains so that you achieve full frequency response with low signal to noise. I have experimented with the ION 'toy' which they call a turntable. The cost of a good DAC alone is generally 5 times the cost of the ION which contains a very poor quality DAC. The noise alone generated by their DAC is completely unacceptable when listening to any dynamic music. If you listen to compressed music such as Dance, Electronica or house then you might not notice it even though it's there.

It turns out that bang for the buck Technics makes a very good transcription turntable that with a good cartridge and average external DAC would give you much better results than the ION.
