Audio Systems: radio seems t owork but spaekers have no sound, spaekers, speaker units

Question
I have an 06' cobalt. Radio is factory. had speakers upgraded and a sub-woofer and amp installed 2 years ago. Recently the speakers all cut out than came back on a couple of hours later after making several stops.  Couple of days later while listening to the radio it went out again and never came back.  Radio still tells me the time, station and what song is playing. Pulled radio head and the wires seem secure.  Checked fuses and none blown. PLEASE HELP..I ran out of songs to sing to my self.  Thanks!!

Answer
With Christmas coming you can turn to singing Yule hymns, maybe!

I suspect there is a shorted condition causing the amplifiers to go into protection mode.  A shorted speaker line or a shorted voice coil in any one of the speaker units will do this.

You can try removing power from the amps for about 15 minutes; which will reset the protection circuit and allow the amp to work properly.

Then, you may have to lift the speakers temporarily, adding one at a time to see if one of the lines or speakers is causing the drop out.

If you have further troubles, let me know the amp and speaker makes and model numbers so I can get a better idea of what may be going on.  Are you using a power cap?

Final comment; upgraded speakers could be too heavy on the amps causing them to overdrive and therefore overheat. It is an impedance matching problem and/or speaker wiring situation, perhaps.

Let me know if you need more ideas.
