Audio Systems: connecting a turntable to a Bose Wave, bose acoustic wave, phono pre amp

Question
I recently pulled my old Technics SL 1950 turntable out of hibernation and wanted to connect it to my Bose Acoustic Wave music system Series III CD-3000. For the first attempt, I simply plugged the Red and White audio cord from the turntable to the AUX jacks in the back of the Bose. The result was I got sound but only if I maxed out the volume control. The music sounded good but only if you were within a four foot radius of the Bose. I presented my dilemma to salesmen at a few local "audio stores" and found no help.  Finally I tried the local Radio Shack and the salesman was quick to address my question saying that what I needed was a phono pre-amp; which seemed to make sense to me so I ordered the Radio Shack 420-0172 Stereo/Phono Pre-amplifier. With much anticipation it arrived today and I proceeded to connect, following the instructions. Using the phonos red and white I plugged these into the corresponding jacks on the input side and then using another red and white cable plugged into the output side of the pre-amp and the aux jacks of the Bose.  I plugged in the power cord turned on the Bose and the phono [at the lowest volume setting, as I did not know how much punch this thing was going to deliver] and slowly increased the volume control to find that now I have no sound whatsoever. Is there hope, am I overlooking something? I would like to Thank You in Advance for any advise help you can provide.  Terry

Answer
Did you switch the Wave radio to Aux? ...or perhaps the Radio Shack preamp is either defective or has insufficient output. I would return it or bring in your Bose radio and let them make it work. The Aux in of the Wave radio should have a sensitivity of about .5volts. The output of the Radio Shack preamp should be approximately the same. Check the specs of both. There should be a spec sheet on the preamp. If you can't find the specs of the Bose try calling them. As long as your within a volt of each other you should be able to get a comfortable level
