Audio Systems: old amp vs new amp, sherwood receiver, watts rms

Question
Hi I have a technics SA-180 receiver in my bedroom and bought a Sherwood RX-4105 for my living room. Now the technic receiver is 35 watts RMS and the Sherwood receiver is 100 watts RMS but the technics receiver pumps out alot more bass power than the Sherwood receiver does so whats up! I tried the same speaker with both but the technics receiver won in power output!

Answer
Consumer specs are dicey. There are many ways that a manufacturer can rate the power on their amplifier. Then can follow certain acceptable guidelines but the caveat is when they limit the information to only power. Power - peak, RMS, at what frequency bandwidth, for how long and so on. The short version is don't believe everything you read but trust the manufacturer. Technics is a division of Matsushita which is one of the worlds largest manufactures of consumer and pro audio and video. Sherwood is an assembly company that probably only manufactures the faceplate on their components. They may even buy some of their components from Matsushita.  The other element is the efficiency of your speakers. You can only make an A/B comparison if you are using the same speakers.
