Audio Systems: JVC System is completely dead, serviceman, something simple

Question
I was listening to a cd, and the cd stopped.  I could hear it spinning crazily and finally it started smoking.  I unplugged it and now it's completely out.  I can't get the CD out.  The on light will come on dimly, but nothing is happening.  Could it be a fuse blown or something simple or does it sound like a major problem?  The system is about 5 yers old.

Answer
Smoke coming from any piece of electronics is never a good sign. It means that some component has burnt out. Fuses don't smoke. They are designed to protect the electronics from smoking.

Assume that an authorized serviceman will have to look at it, tell you how much it will cost to fix and then do the repair if you approve it.

What you need to consider is the following: How old is the unit? Is it out of warranty? How much will it cost to replace with a new unit guaranteed unit vs. how much will it cost for repair? Then after a repair how much will it cost to maintain and is the electronics up to speed with current technology?
