Audio Systems: new construction speakers in walls?, ribbon tweeter, wall speakers

Question
Hello...and thanks for volunteering.

I am putting a 30 wide by 18 foot deep room on my
house...which will serve as the "big room" for leisure
activities.  The room will have a cathedral ceiling rising
to 17 feet at its peak.  Question....I want to pre wire the
walls so that the speakers can be in the walls...the height
of the walls are about 9 feet...I want to use the speakers
for both stereo and projection TV surround sound. Is there
a guide to placement of "in wall" speakers...and which type
would you recommend.

Thanks again,
dj

Answer
In wall speakers are always a compromise to complete speaker systems. That being said for in walls Polk and Sonance make a good variety. I recommend choosing a speakers with 6 1/2" to 8" diameter woofers. If you're looking for high end I recomend anything with a ribbon tweeter. In this case you will need to follow the manufacturers instructions as far as recommended height. Standard speakers should be no higher than 8 feet with an optimum height of 5 feet above finished floor. Avoid placing speakers in corners. Left and right front and rear should be placed at the outer corners of the seating area. The center channel and subwoofer should be located at the center of the projection usually below. If the system is a 7.1 then you need to put speakers on the side walls and the same height as the other speakers at around 8 feet from the screen.
