Audio Systems: subs, dual voice coil, car audio faq

Question
QUESTION: so i have 2 12" 1200w powwer acoustik subs and a 1200 w pionier mono amp i was wondering if i need to run the audio wire from the amp to one sub input then out of that sub and into the next sub and finaly back to the amp or just run 2 wires to each sub and conect to both inputs? or if theres another way?

ANSWER: You must match the impedance.  If the subs are dual voice coil you must decide whether to parallel or series them. If the mono amp will drive a 1 ohm load and the Acoustik subs are dual voice coil 4 ohms, for example, you could put all four coils in parallel.  If the amp is only good for 2 ohm load you must wire the voice coils differently.

If the load impedance is lower than the rating of the amp you can cause damage to the amp.

So, let me know the impedance ratings of the subs and the amp; then we can talk again about how to match the impedance.

QUESTION: ok thanks ya the impedance on the amp is 2 ~ 8 Ohm and i was guna ask u which 1200w sub is louder. the pioneer TS-W307D2|D4 with(2 or 8 ohm)impedance or the power acoustik pw2-12m with dual 4ohms impedance. i would like to know how to wire whichever is going to be louder/better?
thanks

Answer
TS-W307D2|D4  is 89db sensitivity

Power Acoustik pw12-12m  Sensitivity not given by the manufacturer but it seems, by a few testers to be about 85db

The above URL gives all the wiring diagrams for DVC configurations.

With a mono amp you cannot put all 4 coils in parallel because the impedance will drop to 1 ohm. So, you must put then in series parallel as shown here:

Now, as to your question about which will play louder:

A 3 db difference is a 2/1 power difference.  Therefore, if the Power Acoustik drivers are 3 db less sensitive than the Pioneers it will take about two times the power from the amplifier to produce the same SPL.  That being said, performance inside the enclosures you choose makes a huge difference.  The bottom line depends on the enclosure and the installation in the vehicle AND the overall quality of the drivers.  You will be best off to visit a few car shops and get some hands-on feel for these speakers.  I like Pioneer products; they are a great company with great design engineers back in the factory.  I have no personal experience with Power Acoustik, but for a manufacturer to fail giving the sensitivity figures in their technical literature is unpardonable.

Hope this helps.
