Audio Systems: turntable hum, audio technica, tonearm

Question
I am not an audio expert, but I enjoy vintage stereo stuff. I have a yamaha YP-B2 with a new Audio Technica AT120E cart. My system sets on concrete and the speakers are on concrete, but near by. I am getting hum at fairly low volume. I can turn my bass way down, but is this normal or is my tone arm set up wrong. I have it adjusted to 1.5 with 1.5 anti skip. My other turntable does not have this problem, but I have never owned a turntable this sensitive.

Answer
Hum in a turntable generally has little to do with the turntable. The  factors that can generate hum are the tonearm the cartridge the audio cable connected to your preamplifier and the tonearm ground. All turntables should have a separate ground wire from turntable (connected to the tonearm) then your preamplifier. You can eliminate some of the questionable elements by starting with the connections to the preamp, carefully shorting the pins of the cartridge head shell. Plug the head shell back into the tonearm making sure that it is well seated in the tone arm. Cleaning the head shell and tonearm contacts. These are some of the tests you can do.
