Audio Systems: lights dimming, heavy duty alternator, power capacitor

Question
I have 2 12 inch memphis woofers on a 1100 class d mephis amp. i also have one compasitor. evertime the bass hit me lights dim. would a drycell battery hepl me with this problem.

Answer
No, a dry cell will not due you any good (unless it is a big one - say the size of your trunk!)

You probably need bigger power caps and/or bigger battery in the car.

ONE:  You did not say how big the cap is, but it must be a really big one to do any good for 2 subs.  Total of a couple of farads at least - which is very expensive.  This is not a good solution due to the overall average load on the alternator and battery being increased.

TWO:  Sometimes you can add another car battery and put it in parallel with the unit already in the vehicle.  This is not a good solution, however, due to difference in charge and discharge rates of the batteries - even if they are identical units from the same manufacturer and same model number.

The best solution is a new heavy duty battery and alternator.  The battery is not so expensive - under $100 - but a heavy duty alternator may be considerably more.  You may have to increase the wire size of the main power line going to the amp in order to get max performance out of it, also.

Some crank up pros use a bank of 2 or 3 car batteries in parallel just to power the audio system for a couple of hours.  These batteries are not connected to the car audio system and are charged up at night by an external charge system when the car is not being used.

So, there are many solutions, but the high output alternator is the best of all under ordinary conditions.
