Answer
There are many possibilities.

It is most likely the player has any of these conditions with number ONE being the most common for older machines. Newer ones are usually number TWO or THREE below.

ONE: The laser diode inside the optical pickup is weak, dying or dead.  Often you can tell it is going weak because it will not play a dvd but plays audio discs quite well - but eventually will not play the audio either.  This may be the situation in your case!

TWO:  The optical pickup is badly out of alignment. It can be cause by wear, bumping or dropping the unit - which knocks the delicate assembly out of adjustment.  Sometimes car vibration or pulling the unit in or out of the dash will cause misalignment.

THREE:  The digital detector which reads the digital information coming off the disc is defective and cannot decipher the data.

FOUR:  The lens on the optical pickup is too dirty to let the laser beam shine through sufficiently.  It can be cleaned with a cotton q-tip (but don't use any liquids on it).

With a unit this old it is far better to just replace the unit.  The cost of repair and/or alignment is quite steep, actually, and could be as much or more than a new head unit.  Further, your unit is now several generations obsolete; they don't play one-offs very well at all.  Most people are just putting in an aux jack and playing their MP3 or iPODs in the car. You can rip the cds and put them on your pocket player and just take it with you!  All new cars have aux jacks on the front panel just for this.

Does this help?  Let me know if you need more.
