Audio Systems: Fisher stereo amplifier CA-272, avery fisher, fisher stereo

Question
QUESTION: Initial prob: zero speaker outputs.

Found two 4 amp/250v fuses blown.  Replaced, only to have one blow again.  Put meter on speaker output, replaced fuses again  and saw 60 volts on output ....stopped testing quickly.  Perhaps some component failed to produce this problem??

Thanks for your help.  Herb.

ANSWER: Is this Fisher the new Japanese company or the original American made Fisher? I used to be a technician for the American Fisher company. Anyway it sounds like you've got blown output devices. If it's in warrantee then take it to an authorized factory service. If not then tell me how much you paid for it and I'll tell you if it's worth fixing.

QUESTION: Thanks for your quick response.
Unit (entire hi fi system) is about 30 years old. Forgot how much I paid for it, but it has served me well.
Just two days ago, bid on - and bought a used CA-275 amplifier off e-bay for $26 + shipping.  Hoping that will solve my problem. Locally, an electronic repair place was asking $50 just to look at it. Can't say I blame them, but I suspect I did better, trusting the CA-275 will do all the CA-272 did, and that it works.  Thanks again.

Answer
We may me talking about two completley different things. I didn't ask you how old your stereo system is just the amplifier you bought on ebay.

If the CA-275 is 30 years old then here is my response. Avery Fisher company  was just taken over by a Japanese OEM company. The company was riddled with problematic output devices that blew out if you crossed your eyes. There even was a recall at the time. Since manufacturers are only required to carry parts for 5 to 7 years from last time of manufacturer, they would not have the parts. Fisher changed the OEM company several times which means that the company completely changed the amplifier. I'm not even sure whether the company is in business at all right now. The only remaining possibility is you being a hobbyist. Then you would try substituting output devices. Unless you truly understand electronics you need to be very careful of de-emphasis networks as well as DC requirements for the semi conductors. Literally everything you do with that receiver must be well tested before you attempt to put a load on it.

$26 is not a lot of money. If you want my advice, 30 years is 28 years too old for any amplifier not of performance standard. It was never a great amplifier nor was it the original American Fisher.

In the end if the technician wants $50 to repair it and it will be guaranteed for 90 days then there's not much to lose. Frankly I would look for something new on ebay with it's warrantee.
