Audio Systems: no sound, lincoln mark viii, how to use a voltmeter

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1993 lincoln mark viii the power is on but no sound.I check all fuses in the car. It is a jbl.I need to know if there is a fuse on the amp or not and if there is how do you get the cover off to check it. Thank you sharon

ANSWER: It could be the fuse on the power amp.  Not sure where it is mounted, but should be a fuse port somewhere on the back railing; you should not have to remove any cover to get to it.

It has probably lost power or gone into protection mode.  Here is what I recommend.

FIRST CHOICE:  Go to Walmart or Home Depot and buy their voltmeter (under $10) and check for 12v power at the input to the amplifier.  Check the ground wire to make sure it is going to a good chassis connection, too.

SECOND CHOICE - If you are not sure how to use a voltmeter:  At the power amplifier, disconnect the power wires from the amp (there are three of them; one ground, one 12 battery line and on 12v remote turn-on line).  Also, disconnect the speaker wires temporarily; making sure you remember where they go back when you reconnect; they must be exactly as you removed them.  Doing all this will reset the amplifier.  Then, after the wires have been disconnected for 15 minutes, at least, connect the three power wires and turn it on.  Don't know if there is an ON lamp/light for the amp or not, but if so, look for it.  Then, if it seems okey, turn it off, then connect only one speaker at a time.

NOTE: It is possible, for example that only one speaker is defective and is causing the amplifier to go into protection (electronic OFF) mode.

Hope this will help you get at the problem.

If it is too complicated for you, a local repair/install shop can identify the problem very quickly (for a fee, of course).

Best wishes,
C

QUESTION: do you have the wiring diagram for the amp on the 1993 Lincoln mark viii Thanks Sharon

Answer
If you google for this phrase:

1993 lincoln mk amplifier wiring diagram

you will be able to pull up several references to your car.

The problem is this:  There are various JBL configurations and you need to know how to determine which system your car has.  Some JBL systems that year did NOT have an external amplifier, but most of them did.  And, the amplifier is either mounted underneath the passenger front seat or in the trunk.  Once you find the location for the amp it will be obvious about the wiring because there are usually only 3 power  lines and then speaker outputs.  GND, 12v constant and 12v remote turn on will be clearly labeled somehow.

Also, you can learn much by going to the www.crutchfield.com and at their "outfit your car" march through the links until it comes to the systems for your exact car, then you will know what the replacements are which will clue the contents of your Lincoln.

Hope this helps.
