Audio Systems: CPR665 Mobile Audio Combo Wiring Spark, gmc sonoma, speaker outputs

Question
Hi. I just recently connected my Dual CPR665 CD player/radio into my 1996 GMC Sonoma. However, during the installation of the unit, a spark occurred between two sets of wires - one of the set is for connection to the battery (red wires). Because of the spark, my unit does not power on, now. Only the unit's button lights turn on when my vehicle's headlights turn on. I have tried pressing the Reset button on the unit, but to no avail. I would like to know what I can do to power on my CPR665. Thank you.

Answer
It is quite impossible to say what happened inside the unit without knowing for certain which wire touched where when the spark was produced.  However, it is always of concern when such happens. You should take precautions when installing a head unit to make sure you know exactly where the power wires of the unit and the auto are and how they are to be connected. It is wise to pull the fuse on the line coming from the battery until you have the installation complete or at least until the wiring is in tact.

Since the panel light comes on with the headlights it seems you have a miswiring!

And, there is a  possibility the unit may have damage.

To check the Dual head unit you will probably have to pull the unit out and bench test it.  To do this, use long leads to connect it to the battery in the car and a separate stand alone speaker that can be connected to one of the speaker outputs. If it will work outside the vehicle then you can go about checking the wiring for errors.

The above may help you connect the wires properly.  You must have the manual of the Dual unit and make sure the speaker and power lines from it are connected properly to the wiring of the vehicle.  This is often easiest done by using a wiring harness for your vehicle. They can be acquired from www.crutchfield.com and www.installer.com and such places.

Good Luck,
