Audio Systems: Sony FM/AM Receiver STR-DE675, speaker load, receiver str

Question
My receiver stops after @ 3mins. while I play CD's and the displayed message is "PROTECT".  I have to turn the receiver off and on.  The receiver will work and then stop again with the same message.  I looked in the manual but this error message is not addressed.  Please help.

Answer
'Protect' means that it's overheating and going into thermal overload. There are several things that you can check. The good new is that it actually works for a short period of time. You should not turn it on again until you check the following:

Make certain that you are not exceeding the manufacturer speaker load. By that I mean if you are using more than one speaker on a channel then you should be using an impedance matching device. Your amplifier will have a spec and so will your speakers.

Check that there are no shorted cables on either the amplifier end or the speaker end.

Lastly..if none of the above solves the problem then try disconnecting one speaker at a time and see if it keeps working with one of them.

You don't need to play the waiting game when doing these tests. Your amplifier should not run hot. Place your hand on top of it for one time before it goes into protect and feel how hot it gets. That should not happen when the load is correct. You can also disconnect both speakers and see how cool it runs without a load. If it still runs hot without a load, then there is an internal problem with your receiver.
