Audio Systems: surround sound, point experience, left speaker

Question
Can surround sound be acheived using only 4 speakers connected to me receiver?

Answer
15 years ago Dolby still had a 4 point phantom system that gave the effect of a center speaker. Those were the days when surround sound was completely processed so that it's effect was more of tricking you into thinking that actions came from different speakers. Nowadays true surround sound like dts, are created using 5 to 7 different channels. When there is a train coming at you from your right... going to the back left, the sound is really moving from the front left speaker to the back right with the ambiance thru all of the speakers. There are still some manufacturers who make 4 point system but in reality they are no different then the 1960's qudraphonic sound and not surround sound.

So the answer is how real do you want the experience? Personally I think it's all rather distracting from the viewing. I'm of the 4 point experience with speakers that out perform 99% of all surround system speakers. My advice is if you've already got it, experiment with it. Add a subwoofer to extend the experience even more but don't let on that it's not real surround sound. See how many mavin's figure it out.
