Audio Systems: can a small amp hurt bigger speakers, sound reproduction system, classical pipe organ

Question
hey experts!!! whats up??? i might sound dumb to you guys but this is my question. i have 2 subwoofers coming that are 600W @ 4ohms but my amp is only 1200W @ 2 ohms. Is because my amp is to small with it hurt my speakers. Will the speakers clip or anything. what should i do????

Answer
Don't worry.  The power specs are speakers mean very little.

The most important thing to do is match the speaker load impedance to the rating of your amplifier.

Thus, if you have the two subs in parallel they will present 2 ohm load to your amp which should be okey.

Then, the next thing to do is keep the volume control down from overdriving the amplifier. Severe clipping distortion in the amplifier can cause difficulties with some speakers. So, you should always watch it and not drive the speakers into heavy distortion.

Why do you say your amp is "small"?  It is not small and I hope you have a heavy duty 12v line from battery to the amp and that your alternator is heavy duty to power up such a heavy load to the battery!  Under peak music conditions your sound reproduction system could be drawing 100 amps from the battery system.  Typical alternators are 50 to 60 amps. If you are listening to classical music you will be okey. If you are listening to typical rock or pop (or classical pipe organ!) you will become current hungry in short order and over time may run into trouble with the battery and alternator overloading.

Happy Listening,
