Audio Systems: cleaning old gear, metal chassis, exterior face

Question
I recently inherited a valuable, old Fisher tube FM tuner. It is very dirty both inside and out. 1) How should I clean the metal faceplate without harming the lettering?  2) I know how to clean the pots, but how should I clean the dirty metal chassis? It is covered with 40 years of grime & dust  even though it was kept in the house. Thanks,

Answer
The best way is to use comnpressed air.  Cleaning the exterior face, I typically use a watered down glass cleaner.  Depending upone what the dirt consissts of, you may need a cleaning solution for the chassis as well.  Again I would use the glass cleaner.  Do not spray directly on the unit, but dampen a cloth and use that.
Good luck,
Dan
