Audio Systems: a/d converters, digital transformation, input configuration

Question
i have two questions regarding a/d converters

1.)if an a/d converter does not have mic pres how do you connect mic pres to a/d converters?

2.)do motu 1296 and motu 192 have mic pres? also does the digi 192 i/o have mic pres as well and if not how do i pplug in mic pres into it?

Answer
1.  ADC it merely a device to take the analog input and output a digital transformation of that analog input. Each ADC has its own input configuration depending on what the manufacturers design goals were.  You must check its specifications for which I/O it supports.

Typical, in professional audio, is to use XLR connectors and cables to connect between the I/O ports of the preamp and ADC, but optical and fiber are sometimes used.  You can google for all these things.

2.   I am going to let you do some of the homework here:

for the 1296 see:

for the 192 see:
http://www.motu.com/products/pciaudio/HD192/specs.html

for the digi 192 see:
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?itemid=4892&langid=100

If you are going to be using these products, you need to know the I/O requirements and how to set them up.  You could do for a visit to a studio that uses these and similar products; ask them to let you see the cabling and connection schemes, their rack of connecting cables, etc. and it will help you to understand more fully.

Best wishes,
