Audio Systems: about buying an amp for my car system, ac voltmeter, proper gauge

Question
Hello,
I have a kenwood kvt715 dvd  receiver in my car  just installed  with 4 guage wiring   I also have an option to use 2 10 inch solo barics in a custom box  or 1  10 inch solo baric in a custom box  I own both  not sure if I need 2.   I have this system in a 1993 dodge stealth    i am looking for an amp to power the sub .  my question is  I have 2 blown amps   an alpine mrd500 mono   and an old kenwood 1023 . The kenwood always sounded phenominal as i was told it was always a sought after model.   now both amps blew i believe on the output end because the place that rewired my subs  did it wrong.  I am wondering if I should get one of these amps fixed or If I should buy a new amop and rewire my subs again at a different place of course.  I had the kenwood repaired a year or so ago  and it worked for a week before blowing , because the dual 10 inch  solo baric box was wired wrong .  what would you recomend?  thanks Brian

Answer
I would just get a new amp. Preferabley CEA-2006 complaint amps (both of the brands you have are nowadays).

To keep from blowing anything, some tips:

1. Don't exceed the RMS watts of a speaker by more than 10%.

2. Use the proper gauge wire for ANY and ALL connections.

3. Have your subs in the right enclosure for them. Subs in the wrong box can sound bad or can even be damaged.

4. Don't load the amp below what it can tolerate for an ohm load.

5. Set the gain or level control on the amp correctly.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp.

Here is a guide that will help you set the gain correctly http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.

If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g
