i have an Insignia amplifier with some new subs but it went into protect mode and my manual says to 'remove speaker leads, and reset amp' now i think i know how to remove the speaker leads but how do i reset it?

Removing power.  You can't load the amp below what it will tolerate for impedance (ohms) or it will keep going into protect mode.

Also, be sure to set the gain right.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp to prevent clipping (damage by over powering).

You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
