Audio Systems: sony cd player in 99 silverado, sony cd player, dash lights

Question
QUESTION: hey i hooked up a new sony cd player in my 99 silverado. now my dash lights dont work. i saw where you helped another guy w/a silverado and the same problem but i didnt really understand what the answer was. can you help? ive hooked up 3 other cd players in different vehicles and never had problems but this one i did. can you give me some simple answers that may be the solution? thanks, bobby.

ANSWER: Do the lights come back on if you disconnect the Sony?  If not, maybe a fuse has gone. If the fuse goes again after reconnecting the Sony then it is cross wired somehow and placing a heavy load or short on the circuit that feeds the dash lights.  For example, if you connected the 12v power line to the Sony and it drew heavy current when the  volume is turned up it could over power the fuse.

Check the wiring of the power lines to make sure what is going on.

Go to page 6 of this pdf:

http://installdr.com/InstallDocs/GM/PDF/460005.pdf

to check out the wiring for speakers and for the power lines.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: i disconected everything and the lights still dont work. replaced the switch checked all fuses (twice) and checked all bulbs. i looked at the diagram and im going to check it tomorrow. thanks for all your help.

Answer
You may have to trace out the 12v lines to find out where it got lost!  Best tool for that is a voltmeter that can easily check for voltage at any point where you can touch the metal of the wire or conductor with the probe of the voltmeter lead.  Best voltmeter for auto checking is found at Walmart or Home Depot  for under $10.

Hope you find it.
